Hi there, we’re the Beans. And guess what? We’re always hungry. For good food, sure, but also for hilarious conversations, unexpected adventures, and loyal friendships. So we try to live our lives in a way that keeps that good stuff flowing. Please, pull up a chair (or a yoga ball, a bar stool, a log, a giant jawbreaker, you know, whatever) and join us!
Right now our family consists of a Mommy Bean, a Daddy Bean and a Baby Bean. MBean and DBean are writers who’ve specialized in topics as varied as food, books, film and technology. Baby specializes in simple phonemes, but don’t worry, any day now he’ll be ghost-writing your novel. Just give him some time.
Like a band of crazies, we’ve decided to uproot our lives (again) and move to New York City. We originally hail from California, but spent five years breathing in the culture and pollution in Beijing.
This blog you’re reading is all about what fills us. To that end, you’ll probably find yourself reading a few family recipes (mostly demystifying the Chinese home kitchen) as well as tales of our mealtime shenanigans. Plus, as new transplants to one of the greatest food cities in America, we’ll let you know just how special that tap water is before we’ve drunk the Kool-aid, so to speak. This means we will also have to sample many bagels. Many, many bagels. You’re welcome.
But as you know, man does not live on bread alone. We also feed on stories, on inspiration and really kick-ass TV shows. So, we’ll be talking about the other things that fill us, too. Books we’re reading, movies we’re watching, video games we’re playing. We’ll also be chronicling our inevitable come-uppance as soft-bellied Californians trying to make it in cold, hard New York City. Watch us cry as we hunt for an apartment, scream as we escape giant rats, and go silent under three feet of snow. This is the stuff reality TV is made of, folks.
We’re so glad you’re here. Thanks for joining us on our ride, and please make yourselves at home. The fridge is that way, and could you grab me an Otter Pop on your way back?
